Starting with Django

June 16, 2009

In last 3 days I have decided to learn Django Web framework. Django is web framework for web development with Python. Reading documentation on http://www.djangoproject.com/, I’ve found that it is very useful and lighweight. In this post, I’m gonna explain how to install Django on your Ubuntu mashine.

1. Download Django from http://www.djangoproject.com/download/
2. Extract archive and navigate to Django-1.0.2-final folder(use cd Django-1.0.2-final from terminal)
3. After that start installatin with command
sudo python setup.py install
4. You can find you Django installation file in /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/django.
5. To start the first Django project you must first tell your Ubuntu that the django-admin.py script (in bin directory) is safe to run as a program. Navigate to /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/django/bin. You can do that with command chmod +x django-admin.py.
6. Run sudo django-admin.py startproject nameOfYourProject to start you project. New folder is created in /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/django folder with name of your project. You can create project in other directory, navigate to wanted directory and type command
sudo python /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/django/bin/django-admin.py startproject nameOfYourProject
