Easy way to install flash plugin in Ubuntu 8.04

May 26, 2009

In earlier version of flash plugin for Linux, there were so many problems with installation and functionality. Now, with version 10 it’s so easy to install and use this plugin for Firefox and here is steps for easy installation:

1. You’ll need to first remove any previous versions of Flash Player you have installed with command:

sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree

2. Visit Adobe’s download page, select the .deb for Ubuntu 8.04+ download, and install the package.

3. Restart Firefox.

In some casses maybe this plugin isn’t good and don’t work for you. You can remove it and bring back default version of flash plugin in your Ubuntu. Just type this commands:

sudo apt-get remove adobe-flashplugin
sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

  1. Isn’t flashplugin-nonfree‘s package just pulling Adobe’s Flash off the Adobe server? I’m not sure what the difference is here.

flashplugin-nonfree is not a Flash replacement (like Gnash or SWFdec). It actually is Flash, as far as I know.

I think flashplugin-nonfree and adobe-flashplugin are same packages but with different versions (9 and 10). I’ve found discussion on Ubuntu forum about these packages(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1027980). I know for sure that flashplugin-nonfree package makes me so many problems last years on Hardy and Intrepid.
flashplugin-nonfree is not a Flash replacement, it’s flash plugin for Mozzila/Netscape based browsers.

    Thank you for comment:)

  3. Oh, I see. It probably is 9 for Ubuntu 8.04.

    In Ubuntu 9.04 flashplugin-nonfree is 10.
